Vonne Patiag: Director/Writer/Producer

Vonne Patiag is an AACTA and AWGIE-nominated Writer, Director, Producer and Actor. He is the Director of In-Between Pictures, a production company interested in producing personal stories that explore queer/ethnic intersection and that dissect issues of racism and geographical prejudice prevalent to Australia – localised stories with global appeal.

He was a co-writer and producer on Here Out West, a feature produced by Emerald Productions and Co-Curious, currently screening on ABC Iview. Recently, he co-wrote an episode of the Fremantle/ABC series, Significant Others and he was a writer and associate producer for Logie and AACTA  Award nominated The Unusual Suspects for SBS/Aquarius Films. 

Vonne was nominated for an AACTA and AWGIE Award for his work on Halal Gurls (ABC, Create NSW), which he produced, directed and wrote inclusively alongside a team of Muslim/female writers. The series was released on ABC iView and is currently at over 700K+ views worldwide. In 2019, he was profiled as a producer in the Ones To Watch (SPA) program and premiered his short documentary connectIRL at the Antidote Festival. He was awarded the Spirit Of The West award by Made In The West Film Festival 2019 and completed a director’s attachment shadowing Peter Duncan on Operation Buffalo through Porchlight Films for ABC. His short films have screened at multiple festivals across the world – Tomgirl, funded through the GEFF Initiative (Create NSW, SBS) screened internationally at Palms Springs Shortsfest, and in the UK and China and is currently available to watch on SBS onDemand. Window premiered at St Kilda Film Festival and has played numerous national festivals. He received Screen Australia funding (Hot Shots) for his comedy series Boy (Space) Friends, continuing his focus on issues of masculinity, racism and queer identity in Western Sydney. His short documentary Shading was commissioned by Diversity Arts and Create NSW, exploring the white-washing of ethnic skin tones on stage and screen.

He  wrote and performed the life cycle of blanco – a one man show about racism – which had a sold out season in Nov 2020 through Flying Nun 5.2 (Brand X). His first full-length play Obviously!commissioned by Q Theatre, premiered at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre in 2018. He was selected for the Sydney Theatre Company CAAP Directors Workshop 2018 and is currently writing his mainstage debut with Belvoir Theatre. He has directed music videos for artists including DZ Deathrays for their song ‘No Sleep,’ starring Arj Barker.
 
His screen acting credits include the television series The Unusual Suspects (2021), Seven Types of Ambiguity (2017) for Matchbox Pictures, and several short films including Window.
