Shiyan Zheng: Writer/Director

Shiyan Zheng is a Chinese-Australian screenwriter, director, producer and playwright from Western Sydney. In his work, Shiyan balances globally-minded, elevated genre stories with highly specific, character driven and thematically engaging drama.

After graduating from Macquarie University and AFTRS in 2010, Shiyan co-wrote, directed and produced his first award-winning feature film BRUSH. In 2015, Shiyan co-wrote the sci-fi feature film TERMINUS, which was released globally by Vertical Entertainment for Netflix and co-wrote the Screen Australia funded web-series AIRLOCK, which has won multiple international festivals.

In 2018, Shiyan produced live art performance WOMEN IN SHADOW by Iranian-Australian artist, Nasim Nasr for the Sherman Center for Culture & Ideas at the Sydney Powerhouse Museum.

He was a post-consultant for Dev Patel’s directing debut MONKEY MAN in 2022. He also wrote the SBS comedy education web-series, MEET THE CHANGS and its sequel, MEET LEILA AND ZIAD. And in 2023, he served as script editor on the multi-award-winning short film SWEET JUICES.

Currently, Shiyan has several TV series and films in development. He is in pre-production for his crime thriller feature film DISSONANCE and is the co-creator, executive producer and writer on THE SERVIENT, a Screen Australia and Create NSW funded neo-noir crime drama with Aquarius Films.

He is also developing his Create NSW-funded play CAPTAIN, with National Theatre of Parramatta. His NIDA-commissioned play ALICE: MOTHER OF CINEMA, is scheduled for production in June, 2024.
