Sean Bacon: Video Designer

Sean is a Sydney-based video designer who has been working in the industry for almost two decades, collaborating with many national and international artists. Sean’s talent is his use of live video in performance. He is Australia’s leading practitioner working with live capture and live mixing of the visual elements in performance, creating a unique and dynamic theatrical environment. It is his exceptional knowledge and ability to integrate the visual element into the performance that has seen him work with Australia’s leading companies and artists.

Sean began his career in Tasmania, achieving First-Class Honors in Photography, and from there moving into video. He began work in the performance scene with Salamanca Theatre Company. He moved to Sydney in 2003 to pursue his career and exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art. He also undertook a number of Australia Council residencies in New York and Paris. In Paris he went on to work as a video artist with dance company Experience Harrmatt. This collaboration culminated in performances at the Venice Biennale in 2001.

Sean was a Company Artist with Sydney-based version 1.0 since 2004. version 1.0 evolved from a small project-based company into one of Australia’s most prolific and interesting companies. The company was  triennially funded by the Australia Council for the Arts (since 2009), and by Arts NSW (2012). The expansion and success of the company was largely due to its solid ensemble of deviser/performers and Sean as the company’s resident video artist.

Sean has contributed greatly through new aesthetic ideas and practice-led research in his field. He has recently achieved his Masters at COFA on the use of live camera in performance. Sean’s approach of treating the camera as a performance element equivalent to that of a performer is an important contribution to Australian theatre, which is now backed up by his research and thesis.
