Luke Cartwright: Writer/Director

Luke Cartwright creates vivid storyworlds and deconstructs the human experience.

His 2021 short film The Home Team depicts a middle-aged couple rediscovering life after spending decades in a suicide cult. The film stars Australian comedy legend Paul McDermott alongside screen luminaries Tara Morice and Nicholas Hope. The Home Team won Best Screenplay at the Paris Short Film Awards and was an official selection to Flickerfest 2022.

In 2020, Luke wrote and directed the 45-minute audio drama Patricia about a doomed love affair between a young woman working in a call centre and a man who was recently involved in a bank robbery. The work was presented as a series of bugged phone calls between the two characters, who are unaware that the police are listening. Patricia was released as a podcast through All The Best and broadcast by Sydney radio station FBI.

During the same year, Luke released the epic graphic novel, Obscura, in collaboration with Polish artist Lukasz Wnuczek. The book portrays a fraudulent spirit photographer in Van Diemens Land circa 1860s. The Harvard Crimson called Obscura a “cleverly unsettling work of gothic horror.”

In 2017, Luke wrote, produced and directed a short film called Escape Beijing, which Shorts TV acquired for worldwide broadcast.

Luke recently graduated with a Master of Arts in Screenwriting at the Australian Film, Television and Radio School.
